Pipevine swallowtail caterpillar

This is a pipevine swallowtail caterpillar. It might look scary, but it will turn into a beautiful black swallowtail butterfly. The caterpillar is ok to touch, but it is poisonous and shouldn’t be eaten. This photo was taken on 5 april, 2018 in the Hill Country in central Texas.

Issus coleoptratus nymph

One of my favorite little critters was spotted again in the garden on 4 July. I haven’t had a chance to post the pictures to the site until today. It’s got the only gears found in nature in it’s legs and it’s got a blue brush sticking out of its back end. How cool is that? It’s such an amazing looking little bug. Very steampunkish.
